A Piece of British History: Dunhill Root Briar (1962)
We enter the world of high-end collecting with one of the most sought-after pipes among enthusiasts of the "White Spot" brand. This magnificent Dunhill belongs to the prestigious Root Briar line, originally introduced in 1931 and reserved exclusively for the rarest, finest, and flawless briar burls. The smooth finish and light coloring are designed specifically to bring out the wood's natural grain to the fullest.
The Appeal of the "TN" Code and the "Made in England 2" Date Stamp
Satisfying the curiosity of purists, the "TN" marking on the shank is the historic alphanumeric code used by Dunhill before the numerical system was standardized in the 1970s. It identifies a classic, perfectly proportioned straight Dublin, characterized by a slightly forward-leaning bowl; renowned for its formal elegance and perfect balance in the hand and mouth.
The dating of this gem is precise and unequivocal: the "MADE IN ENGLAND 2" stamp certifies that the pipe was made in 1962 (adding the suffix '2' to the reference year 1960).
The 4 Ⓐ Grade and Briar Quality
Alongside the country of origin, we find the "4 Ⓐ" stamp. The number "4" indicates a medium size group (Group 4), ideal for long, full-bodied smokes. The circled letter "A" was the designation Dunhill historically used to identify the Root Briar luxury finish on pipes from those years. The straight black stem, without a filter, ends in the famous white dot (White Spot), the unmistakable symbol of the London house.
Rated five stars (*****) by Mr. Pierpaolo Spinozzi, this broken-in pipe is in exceptional condition, a very rare opportunity to own a piece of English craftsmanship with over sixty years of history behind it.
