TITANIC PIPES RMS TITANIC 1809 - 1865 No other ship in history has captured the world's imagination more than RMS Titanic. Conceived by Lord Pirrie, financed by American financier John Pierpont Morgan, and designed and built by naval architect Thomas Andrews and managing director Alexander Carlisle of Harland & Wolff of Belfast in Ireland, Titanic was built to become the largest and luxury passenger ship of the world. Its construction began on March 31, 1909 and was completed on May 31, 1911. It took another year for the interior to be fitted out. With a length of 269.1m and a height of 53.3m over her four oval funnels the Titanic was the largest ship in the world and a true floating city, combining unprecedented luxury and lavishness. She was the first ship to feature a heated swimming pool, gymnasium, steam room, squash court, miniature golf course, 4 electric lifts and the most luxurious 1st class cabins and suites imaginable. With her double hull structure and 15 watertight bulkheads the ship was required to remain afloat in the event of a major accident, and this gave Titanic the designation 'unsinkable'. Titanic had 3 passenger decks, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class, the latter mostly occupied by poor immigrants hoping to find a better life in the New World.But it was the prominent first class passengers who had captured the world's imagination, among them American billionaire Sir John Jacob Astor IV, steel magnate Benjamin Guggenheim, and Macy's department store co-founder Isidore Strauss. It is reported that there were 48 millionaires aboard. The Titanic began her maiden voyage at Southampton, England on April 10, and stopped above to Cherbourg in France and the following day to Queenstown (now Cobh) in Ireland to load additional passengers and in-flight supplies before continuing on to the final destination of New York in the United States. About 900 crew members and more than 1,300 passengers were on board. On the night of April 14th disaster struck, when 400 miles south of Newfoundland the Titanic's starboard side collided at 11:40 with an iceberg. The damage was too severe for the ship to stay afloat. Captain Edward John Smith gave the order to prepare the lifeboats and send the distress call. The 20 lifeboats theoretically offered space for 1,178 of the 2,224 people on board, but only 710 people mainly from 1st and 2nd class could be rescued the following morning by the Cunard RMS Carpathia, the first vessel to arrive. All the other ships that later arrived on the spot, including the CS Mina from Halifax, could only recover floating corpses and debris from the freezing waters of the Atlantic. In September 1985 a French-American expedition found the wreck of the Titanic at a depth of 2.5 kilometers. THE LIMITED EDITION TITANIC PIPES Titanic pipes were specially designed and manufactured to commemorate the centenary of the maiden voyage of the fateful RMS Titanic in April 1912. The Titanic pipe features a classic Group 4 Horn shape (4135) fitted with a stainless steel ferrule. precious metal engraved with the inscription TITANIC 1912-2012. The pipe curator is an elliptical cylinder inspired by the oval chimneys of the Titanic made of steel and contains a tamper with magnetic closure. In the upper oval part it is encapsulated in a Perspex dome, an original piece of wood from the Titanic. This wood was removed from the seat of a damaged deck chair that was salvaged in 1912 immediately after the sinking of the Titanic by the ship Mina which sailed from Halifax. Titanic pipes are real collector's items and to underline their value they are presented in a prestigious large box in wood and lacquered leather in the colors of the RMS Titanic. The surface of the lid features a black and white painting of the ship, while the inside of the lid features a metal map engraved with the track of her maiden voyage.
