THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR
The Battle of Trafalgar, fought on October 21, 1805 on the Spanish coast near Cadiz, was the most significant naval battle of the 19th century.
The British Royal Fleet with 27 ships in line engaged with the combined Franco-Spanish fleet of 33 ships under Admiral Pierre de Villeneuve.
In the course of the battle, the Allies lost 22 ships, while the Royal Navy lost none. The British lost 449 men and 1214 wounded, while Allied casualties amounted to 4480 killed, 2250 wounded and 7000 captured.
The British victory not only exemplarily confirmed Britain as the dominant world naval power for the next 100 years, it also ended the threat of Napoleonic invasion.
Admiral Nelson died during the battle and his sarcophagus rests in St. Paul's Cathedral in London. He is remembered as Britain's greatest naval hero and London's famous Trafalgar Square takes its name from the battle with Nelson's statue dominating the square.
